Chodō’s Legacy

Kōshin-an has been restored to preserve the space of retreat Chodō desired. As a place of escape within the city, it embodies the values of wabi and sabi (the Japanese sense of quiet simplicity and subdued refinement) that Chodō cherished. Kōshin-an has been designated by Matsuyama City as a Municipal Important Cultural Asset, and it is used by the people of Matsuyama for various activities.

Chodō used to lament the devastation of the paddy fields around Kōshin-an, as well as the poverty of the farmers. We sincerely hope that the lively sounds in the atmosphere at Kōshin-an today will reach his ears.
